What our customer's say!
"Oregon Trail is a great educational game.", Oregon Trail is great when brought to the classroom instead of textbooks but can it compete? I find this game enjoyable and fun for a more education alternative but this game seems to be in my cabinet more than Wii Fit or Halo. The game can be really enjoyed by casual and maybe hardcore gamers but still can't seem to catch up to my liking of games that are in my Xbox or Wii.
This game is more of a decision game where you travel the Oregon Trail, but before you go, you have to supply yourself with goods. Then most of the game is making decisions like what medicine to use, which way to cross the river, or how many days to rest. The main part of action in the game is the hunting and the fishing where you use your own strategy and not just making decisions. That's the part of the game I liked the most, not because of the hunting but because I was doing it. And that's what leads my opinion on the answer of the question I asked in the beginning of this review. If this game wants to compete and be more enjoyable it has to have the player doing the work not making the decisions. I like games because of the fulfillment of my work. I have strong beliefs that video games can teach and can make a big impacted in the schools and this game is just the start.
"game review", My fiancee and I ordered this game because we remembered playing it as kids in school. The ordering process was easy and we recieved our product quickly.
"Extremely Poor Design !!!", Cast your pole in the water to catch a fish, I see fish, they don't move. Never ever !!! click on the guide or diary if you do there is no way to resume the game, you must use control alt and delete buttons and then click on end program now. Even knowing NOT to click on dairy or guide One will unintentionly click on it and you will have heck getting back to your desk top. A good thing I do like is the fact one can see how many $$$$ they have as they travel. OREGON TRAIL 5TH EDITION PC
"Don't Buy if you Have a MAC", This game maybe fun, but if you have a MAC with OS 10, forget about playing. This game runs on a font no longer available to MAC users, so its basically useless.
"Oregon Trail", Amazon was great getting this product to me so quickly. My 9 year old son could wait to play it. However it did not work on my Apple computer because you need a certain font that the computer did not have. So I had to load it on my old pc laptop and he plays it on that. Not sure why it isn't compatible with the Apple desktop. I think because it wants to run on classic and most Apples don't even have classic OS9 anymore

"Here is the New York 18 font fix!", I purchased this and tried to run it on OS X only to run into the same New York 18 font issue everyone else here is complaining about. Well, I happen to be pretty computer-savvy and I found the solution. First, you need to download the file from:
[...]
Then, on your Mac you need to unzip that file. For some reason Stuffit Expander won't expand it, so you need to download a tool that will. Ez7z works great, and you can get it for free from:
[...]
Unzip it to your desktop, then double-click on it. You will be presented with a window that has a button called Install Font. Press that and you will get the font installed in your Font Book.
Now go back and try to run Oregon Trails and it will work.
Enjoy.
"Bugs, unstable, confusing, sub-standard", I got this game because I loved it as a kid and I figured, since it's the 5th edition, it would be even better. The first thing that went wrong was when I inserted the CD into the drive to intall it, nothing happend. (I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit). After messing with it for a while, I got it to install, but then when I tried to run the program, it kept giving me an error message telling me the CD wasn't in the drive (when it was). I downloaded a fix which helped, but then I discovered the gameplay was confusing when trying to fish (I still haven't figured out how to catch fish). The graphics are way sub-standard (I could do a better job for free with a digital camera, and on occasion animals (like elk) walk through the sky. The game now crashes whenever I try to fish, and at random times while traveling. If the game was stable and fishing was more straight-forward (and worked) the game would actually be enjoyable to play. It was fun for a few minutes until I kept having to restart the program over and over again because it kept crashing. It seems that the game developers are out of touch with what people look for in a game.
"Love this game!", I have used this game, and enjoyed it, for many years, but needed a replacement recently. By the time I got the replacement, my computer had crashed, and I got a new HP PC, with Windows 7....and can't use the game I just purchased, because it needs to be a 64-bit game. I really hope Oregon Trail 5 will come out in 64-bits, soon!
"Fun Game", It's a fun game to play if you have, I don't know, about 45 minutes to do nothing with. Hunting is fun, and you get a real sense of accomplishment once you win, so you should get it. Definitely meant for kids aged 8-10.
"Great game", Purchased this game for my husband who had positive memories of playing it in grade school. He enjoyed the chance to play it again, this time with more realistic graphics in the 5th version.
